Match Betting Preview

South Africa go into today’s opening Super Eights Group E fixture against England as the bookmakers 4/7 favourites. The South Africans justify their favouritism tag more on their all round performances of the last 12 months, rather than the victories over Scotland and New Zealand in the opening round of this tournament. Although they ruthlessly dispatched a week Scotland team they only scrapped a one run win in a scrappy low scoring game against New Zealand, although still winning without really playing well.

England also have been up and down in this tournament. An awful complacent performance in losing to Holland, followed by a ruthless destruction of Pakistan – who, it has to be said did help England with some hopeless fielding.

If both sides turn up with their A game you would have to expect South Africa to be too strong. Dale Steyn is in his usual reliable form, being well backed up by youngster Wayne Parnell and a strong looking spin unit, while AB de Villiers has taken his game to a new level and is surely one of the best – all forms of games – cricketers in the world at the moment.

England might go with the same eleven that beat Pakistan in their last match, maybe the only change could be a spinner giving way to seemer Ryan Sidebottom or big hitting Graham Napier depending on the pitch. You would imagine that Kevin Pietersen would play this game on one leg, so I would expect him to play no matter what the condition of his achilles.

South Africa are likely to stick with the same eleven tha beat New Zealand.
