The two Test series between England and New Zealand isn’t part of the World Test Championship competition.

It is effectively an additional series that gives the venues some extra revenue, and TV some extra live cricket to show.

What is also does is give New Zealand some game time on English wickets ahead of their up coming World Test Championship final against India in two weeks time.

The Kiwis will have two matches to get used to conditions, and get their team match sharp for the final, which starts at the Rose Bowl on 18th June.

New Zealand will come up against an England side without a lot of it’s premier talent.

England Short of Plenty of Talent

For Joe Root’s team there is no Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, or Jofra Archer.

England do have their premier seam attack available though. And in the case of Stuart Broad, he has been named vice-captain in this series, in place of Ben Stokes.

New Zealand should fancy their chances against an England team giving debuts to James Bracey behind the stumps, with Ollie Robinson or Craig Overton at Number 8.

If Robinson plays, he will also be making his debut.

For New Zealand, they have no Trent Boult for the England series. But apart from that, they are at full strength.

The Kiwi seam attack of Tim Southee, Neil Wager, and Kyle Jamieson will be a handful on an English pitch with a Dukes ball.

They will sense opportunities against England’s inexperienced batting line up, and know this is a golden opportunity for them.

Whoever wins the Toss and bats first will probably hold the key here. It will no doubt be the usual case that there is something in it for the bowlers early on, but weather that storm, and you should be okay.

Can England’s batting handle the Kiwi attack should they bat first? I’m not too sure.

It’s a tight call, and I may well wait for the toss, but given the players missing from the England side, I am going for New Zealand to win this one.
