David Warner to miss opening Test match against India

David Warner out of 1st Test with India

Australia will be without opening batsman David Warner for the 1st Test of the series against India.

David Warner to miss 1st Test against India

The opening batsman picked up an adductor muscle injury in the 2nd ODI against India on 29th November.

Despite making progress in his recovery, it has been announced that Warner won’t be ready in time to play at Adelaide.

Warner issued a statement saying

“I feel I have made great progress in a short amount of time and its best for me to stay here in Sydney to continue working on getting back to full fitness.”

“The injury feels a lot better but I need to be able to satisfy in my own mind and to my team-mates that it is 100-per-cent ready for Test-match conditions. That includes running between the wickets and being agile in the field.”

“Right now I feel I am short of being able to play at peak fitness and another 10 days will make a difference.”

The injury is a further blow to the Australia team, especially given his likely replacement Will Pucovski, could also be ruled out of the Test, after he suffered concussion in the tour match against India A earlier this week.

The only other recognised opener in the Test squad is Joe Burns. So Australia might need to call up reinforcements.

There is talk about possibly moving Marnus Labuschagne up to open. But that would mean a total rejig of the Australia batting line up.

Australia are hopeful Warner can return for the 2nd Test at the MCG, starting on Boxing Day in Melbourne.

Warner Playing the Long Game with his Injury

In coming to this decision, it seems Langer and Warner are playing the long game. Warner’s statement suggests he could play in this match, but that it would be a risk.

And with 3 more Test matches to come against India, it isn’t a risk worth taking.

The 1st Test between Australia and India takes place at the Adelaide Oval. The match starts on 17th December, and is a Day/Night Test match.
