Speaking to Cricbuzz, former England captain, Michael Vaughan names his Top 5 batsmen of the 2020 IPL.
No surprise to see Vaughan favouring players from Mumbai Indians, with the pundit picking 4 players from the 2020 tournament winners. His final selection was from Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).
Starting with his first selection, and Vaughan went with KXIP captain KL Rahul.
Rahul won the Orange Cap with 670 runs, averaging 55.83 from his 14 matches. Despite this, he couldn’t steer his KXIP side into the play-offs.
Mumbai Indians’ Dominate
Next to receive praise from Vaughan was Mumbai Indians opener, Quinton de Kock.
The South African wicket keeper batsman scored 503 runs at a strike rate of 140.5. Pretty impressive for an opener.
The importance of getting the innings off to such a dynamic start wasn’t lost on Vaughan, who said of de Kock…..
“The impact that De Kock creates for his franchise is immense. He makes it count in the first six overs.”
Vaughan also noted the importance of middle and lower order runs, highlighting the efforts of both Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya.
Pollard had an immense strike rate of 191.42, the highest in the tournament. Showing why he is one of the most sought after franchise T20 players in the world.
His middle order batting partner Hardik didn’t fare too badly either. He had a strike rate of 178.98 – third in the overall list.
Reserved for special praise though was Suryakumar Yadav. Vaughan named him as the stand out player of the competition, and was especially impressed with his versatility against both spin and pace.
30 year old Yadav might not have been the top scorer of the competition, but his contributions with the bat came at vital times.
Overall he scored 480 runs, at an average of bang on 40. His strike rate was 145.01, and his top score was 79 not out.
