History of the IPL: Year-by-Year Winners and Award Winners

The Indian Premier League is the biggest domestic franchise competition in world cricket.

From it’s inaugural in 2008, the IPL has attracted the biggest names in world cricket. And with the competition growing in size and stature, the IPL looks set to be the number one domestic competition for the forseeable future.

2008 – Rajasthan Royals

  • Winner: Rajasthan Royals
  • Runner-up: Chennai Super Kings
  • Orange Cap: Shaun Marsh (616 runs)
  • Purple Cap: Sohail Tanvir (22 wickets)
  • Player of the Tournament: Shane Watson

The inaugural IPL season saw Rajasthan Royals, under Shane Warne, win a thrilling final over Chennai Super Kings.

2009 – Deccan Chargers

  • Winner: Deccan Chargers
  • Runner-up: Royal Challengers Bangalore
  • Orange Cap: Matthew Hayden (572 runs)
  • Purple Cap: RP Singh (23 wickets)
  • Player of the Tournament: Adam Gilchrist

Moved to South Africa, the 2009 IPL saw Deccan Chargers rise from 2008’s bottom place to champions.

2010 – Chennai Super Kings

  • Winner: Chennai Super Kings
  • Runner-up: Mumbai Indians
  • Orange Cap: Sachin Tendulkar (618 runs)

MS Dhoni led CSK to their first title, beating Mumbai Indians in the final.

2011 – Chennai Super Kings

  • Winner: Chennai Super Kings
  • Runner-up: Royal Challengers Bangalore
  • Orange Cap: Chris Gayle (608 runs)
  • Purple Cap: Lasith Malinga (28 wickets)
  • Player of the Tournament: Chris Gayle

Chennai became the first team to win back-to-back IPL titles.

2012 – Kolkata Knight Riders

  • Winner: Kolkata Knight Riders
  • Runner-up: Chennai Super Kings

  • Purple Cap: Morne Morkel (25 wickets)
  • Player of the Tournament: Sunil Narine

KKR, led by Gautam Gambhir, lifted their first title by defeating CSK in the final.

2013 – Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians won their maiden title under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.

2014 – Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR chased down 200+ to win their second title, driven by Uthappa’s consistency.

2015 – Mumbai Indians

2017 – Mumbai Indians

MI edged out RPS by 1 run in the most dramatic IPL final to date.

2018 – Chennai Super Kings

2022 – Gujarat Titans
