None of this bodes well for the England Test team with a home series against India on the horizon.

And if that’s not enough, England then travel to Australia looking to regain the Ashes at the end of the year.

Kiwis make light work of England

England’s 1-0 home Test series defeat to New Zealand was confirmed inside a session on Day 4 of the 2nd Test.

In truth, the damage was already done well before Sunday morning. Limp batting displays in both innings from Joe Root’s team ensured England’s fate was long since sealed.

But where does this leave England now ahead of a home series with India, and an away series in Australia?

In England’s defence, they were without leading players such as Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran.

Nevertheless, it was such a toothless display from some of England’s other first choice players, that the management should be concerned.

What’s next for England?

Starting in early August, England take on India in a 5 match Test series.

Joe Root will expect better from his players, and England’s first choice players will all be available.

With England having home advantage, a series win will be expected.

After that, England’s Test team go to Australia for the Ashes. England are the rank outsiders with the bookmakers in Ashes betting odds.

The Aussies are just 1/4 to win the series. A drawn series is 6/1, while you can get 100/30 on Joe Root’s England to win the series and reclaim the Ashes Urn.

If you’re looking for a decent bookmaker for the Ashes, more information can be found here.

Is it time for Root to go?

There have been calls in the media for Root to quit as captain.

That’s unlikely to happen. And with the Ashes following so closely after the India series, I would imagine something utterly disastrous would have to happen for England to axe Root and impose an Ashes tour on a Rookie captain.

First things first though, and attention needs to turn to India.

Root and England need to deal with a lot of issues ahead of the 5 match series.

Who is going to open the batting? Is the captain going to bat at 3 or 4? Who plays out of Bairstow or Crawley? Is Jofra Archer going to play a part? Who is going to be England’s spinner?

There are numerous questions that need answering.

And how Root and England answer those questions, could be key to how the India series goes.

After New Zealand completed an impressive series win over Joe Root’s team on Sunday, we look at what’s next for England.
