What Is The Hundred?

In simple terms it is a variation of cricket based on the T20 format. T20 is 120 balls, while The Hundred, is simply 100 balls.

The ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) wanted a franchise competition to rival the IPL and Big Bash League, and came up with the idea of The Hundred.

Rather than go down the conventional route of a regular T20 franchise competition, the ECB wanted something different. And so we have The Hundred.

How Many Teams Are In The Hundred?

There are eight franchise teams taking part in The Hundred, they are:-

• Birmingham Phoenix (BP)
• London Spirit (LS)
• Manchester Originals (MO)
• Northern Superchargers (NS)
• Oval Invincibles (OI)
• Southern Brave (SB)
• Trent Rockets (TR)
• Welsh Fire (WF)

When does The Hundred Start?

The first match of The Hundred in 2021 is on 22nd July 2021. The match will be played at the Kennington Oval, and is between the Oval Invincibles and Manchester Originals.

This will be the first edition of the competition. It was scheduled to have started in 2020, but was put back a year due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

2021 Format

The format for the 2021 edition looks a bit lob sided to me. All eight franchises will play eight matches in total. That’s four at home, and four away.

All teams will play each other once in round robin format, equalling seven matches each. All eight teams will also play one bonus match against their nearest rivals, making up the eighth match.

The finals are pretty simple, with only the top three in the group qualifying.

The group winners will go straight to the final, with the second and third teams contesting a semi-final, with the winners going into the final.
