Steven Finn impresses

Steven Finn’s impressive run continued as he took (match figures) of 14/106 against Worcester.

He had already showed a good temperament playing for England on the Bangladesh tour earlier this year, and this excellent start to the season will have done his England prospects no harm at all.

Ok, let’s not get too carried away. Afterall it’s Divison 2, and on an early April wicket. Nevertheless figures of 5/69 and a brilliant 9/37 in the 2nd innings is impressive.

Graham Onions omission from the 4th test in South Africa, coupled with his latest injury problems, would suggest there is a possible vacancy in the England attack. Ryan Sidebottom’s chances of nailing down the spot also don’t look too good due to his seemingly constant injury problems.

With the defence of the Ashes starting in November, I would imagine the selectors will use this summers fixtures with Bangladesh and Pakistan to finalise their test side, and squad. Finn’s displays will surely ensure the selectors need to have a closer look at him.

With Broad, Anderson and Swann all pretty much fixtures in the side, there is only really the 4th bowling berth to fill. Even if England reverted back to the five man attack, I would imagine the 5th bowler would have to be a bit of a batsman, probably Luke Wright or Tim Bresnan.

The other options look limited. You’ve got Liam Plunkett who went on the winter tours but never got a game, or maybe Chris Tremlett could come good at last, none of these – along with Onions or Sidebottom – are reliable certainties.

And Strauss and Flower seem to have saved us from another summer of media hype about whether (or not) Steve Harmsion is ready to return to the side by ommiting him from the South Africa tour and virtually calling time on his England career.

With Finn playing in the same side as (part time) England captain Andrew Strauss, he could put himself in pole position with more performances of this standard.

It was also pleasing to hear Finn saying he grew up wanting to bowl like Glenn McGrath. As annoying as ‘Pigeon’ could be to English fans at times, I wouldn’t begrudge us having a bowler as moody and half as good as he was.

  1. I agree. If he keeps this form up (ok, maybe not 14 wickets every match) then he should be given a chance this summer. A bit of variety is just what the England attack needs – especially in Oz – and he could be a great fit. Lot to ask of him at that age I know, and if we had other bowlers like him I would caution against rushing him in, but we don’t… so let’s hope he keeps this form up!

  2. Hi Rich,

Yes I would agree with the fact that he is a bit young, and in an ideal world, England could just blood him gradually.

Just today I read a bit on cricinfo about Liam Plunkett bowling too much down the leg side, and according to the last two squads he is the next in line.

If you look at Plunkett, Saj Mahmood, etc, they have been given chances for England and have never took them, so maybe it is time to look at the next generation.

It’s a shame, but it is a fact of life that England just don’t have many accurate enough bowlers around at the moment. Finn seems to be in that mold, but it would be a lot to ask a 21 with less than 40, 1st class games to step up to the plate and take on that role for England.

A name that popped up in the wickets again today is Chris Woakes, he is another young bowler who might be worth having a look at also. Has a good economy rate and sounds to have a good temperament as well.
