Ponting Sinks to a New Low

He is the first Aussie captain to lose 2 Ashes series in England for 119 years, he has just overseen Australia’s worst test match (3) losing sequence for over 20 years.

Also Australia have slumped to their lowest ever test ranking (5, even lower than the poms) and he has had to endure calls for his head as captain from a host of ex-players, fans and journalists.

Then just when Ponting thought his luck couldn’t get any worse, it did.

In his 2nd innings of Tasmania’s, Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales, Ponting suffered the humiliation of losing his wicket to the pie chucking of Shane Watson.

Just how bad have things got to get for Ricky before his luck bottoms out?

Aussie Humour

This blog is and will remain a non Royal wedding site, but I just had to mention this. On Radio 5 Live an Aussie tourist was asked outside Buckingham Palace what he thought of the Royal engagement, he replied “it is a big news story, but not as big as the Ashes.”

Well said that man.

  1. I reckon it’s a cunning plan to boost Watson’s confidence before the Ashes begins, and that’s why Ricky fell to him.

I wanted your opinion on this; The Australian stats you quoted up there during the period Ponting was captain…do you think any other Aussie captain could have done better?

  2. Hi Stani,

Not really, to be honest I think Ponting is still the best man for the job. It’s easy for people to criticize Ponting, but I look at it from the point of view, would Clarke have done any better? And I believe the answer is No.

Maybe a different decision may have been taken at the toss for the Headingley test match if a different captain was in place? But I’m not totally convinced by that, as I don’t believe the captain makes the decision to bat or bowl on his own.

Would Clarke have bowled first? I doubt it.

I actually think some of the stick Ponting has been getting is a bit harsh, it’s great from an England point of view as it must be putting extra pressure on him.

After all, he is still Australia’s best batsman, so if the extra pressure effects his batting, then all the better.

It’s a case of the grass is always greener. But to sum it up, I don’t think anyone else would have done much different or any better than Ponting.

  3. But he looks like to me, the kind of guy that thrives on criticism. He’s a hard competitor and this will just make him even more competitive. I wouldnt be surprised if he has his best ashes ever.

I do agree though that in many ways he has been a victim of circumstances.

  4. It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest to see him score 500+ runs in the Ashes, he is a great competitor.

It’s probably wishful thinking that the pressure will get to him, although he’s only human and can only take so much.

  5. The problem with Punter seems to be he sometimes wants to show that he is different from other modern day captains but in the end it backfires. Setting strange fields for Hauritz in India can be considered.

His biggest asset was he could get lots of runs and lead from the front but that isn’t happening now.

  6. Good point about the Hauritz field Greyblazer, I know he claimed that Hauritz set his own field, but I don’t buy that one.

And it would be a very poor captain that would let a bowler set a counter productive field, so either way Ponting is culpable.
