Where did that come from?

Have to be honest, after the 1st innings effort I certainly didn’t see this performance coming. Don’t want to tempt fate, but we now have more than a decent chance of leaving Brisbane with a credible draw (famous last words).

England didn’t just occupy the crease on Day 4, they took the attack to the Aussies scoring at well over 3 an over on the day. Strauss and Cook have now shown that we do have the batting to take Australia on.

This could now well strike a psychological blow to the Aussies for the rest of the series.

It does though beg the question, why didn’t we do this in the 1st innings?

I know I have been just a touch critical of the 1st innings effort, but in fairness to England, last night David Lloyd showed the difference in the pitch conditions from Day 1 to Day 4, with the results showing how the green from Day 1 has gradually faded away over the course of the test match.

Maybe batting has got easier as the test has gone on, the evidence seems to be in the scoring. Although I still think 260 was at least 80-90 runs short.

As long as there is no stupid batting collapses in the 1st session today, this now looks a nailed on draw. I’m sure England would have taken that at the start of the series. With only one of England’s attack having bowled in Australia before, Andy Flower will be delighted if they can go into the 2nd test with a games experience behind them and the series still all square.

On matters Australian, Sky Sports seemed to be doing their best to compare Mitchell Johnson with Mike Gatting’s 1986 team of ‘can’t bat, can’t bowl and can’t field,’ with their stat showing no wickets, no runs and no catches after he dropped a simple chance offered up by Strauss.

Johnson now looks like he is becoming the Australian Steve Harmison. Although I wouldn’t write him off just yet.
