Tough call on Rashid

After nearly turning in a match winning performance – with bat and ball – at The Oval on Friday, Adil Rashid unluckily finds himself out of the team to play Australia at Lord’s on Sunday, England instead opted to play batsman Eoin Morgan.

Getting dropped – or being left out for tactical reasons, as was probably the excuse given to Rashid – should teach the selectors something about his temperament off the field. Depending on the individual, after doing so well this could have an adverse affect on his confidence. There is also the man-management side of things to take ito account with a difficult decision like this.

His bowling on Friday – on a helpful wicket – showed plenty of menace and promise with Michael Clarke a well renowned good player of spin struggling to get him away and at times looking bogged down as Rashid bowled his way to respectable figures of 0/37 from his ten overs.

Then with the bat he scored 31 off 23 balls as he nearly got England home with some good lower order hitting. Whether or not his batting will be good enough to make him an out and out all rounder remains to be seen, his county record to date shows that he should be a reasonable enough batsman to make a decent lower order hitter in the mould of Stuart Broad, an attribute highly thought off by England’s selectors more so these days.

The chances are that with the remainder of most of the games in this series being at Lord’s, Nottingham, and Durham, Rashid won’t get much more of a chance over the next couple of weeks which is a shame for him.

Trying to strike the correct balance between blooding new players and winning the series isn’t an easy one for the selectors. While I’m not suggesting dropping Graeme Swann, it would be nice if the selectors could try and get Rashid back in the side for one or two off the remaining five matches.
