The remarkable John Higgins

Whatever you think of him – whether or not he should have been banned for life, etc – there is no doubting that the game of snooker is in a better state with John Higgins in it, rather than out.

Again tonight Higgins showed that remarkable fighting spirit and never say die attitude required to get himself over the winning line against Judd Trump, even the frame he won to clinch the title was won against the odds with a snooker required.

To Higgins’ credit, he claimed to not even have been the best player in the final, that was praise for how well Judd Trump played. In the end it was Higgins’ know how, experience and sheer bloody mindedness that won it for him.

Steve Davis again described him as the best player to have ever played the game, the more I see of him, the more I am starting to believe Davis, and after all who am I to disagree with the view of a legend like ‘The Nugget.’

This was title number 4 for Higgins, statistically Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry are better players with more world championships, but I’m sure that Higgins is more than capable of catching them up over the next few years.

A mention for Judd Trump as well, he has been brilliant over the last 2 weeks. I know a lot of people will say his time will come, but I hope he doesn’t take it for granted as a few shrewd judges said the same thing about Jimmy White 25 years ago.

But one thing that is for certain is that Trump will have a rewarding career in snooker because he is total box office and the sly old fox that is Barry Hearn won’t miss out on that.

A cricketing mention to finish with, it was good to see another true great sitting in the audience watching, the legend that is Dickie Bird.
