How refreshing it was to see Andrew Strauss allow Australia to change their team after the toss, only after handing in their team sheet did Australia realise that wicketkeeper Brad Haddin had fractured a finger in the warm up.
Under the rules, when the team sheet has been submitted it cannot be changed so Strauss would have been quite within his rights to refuse to agree to the Australian request for a team change.
Thankfully Strauss decided to play the game in the right spirit – an accusation was made in Cardiff of him that he wasn’t doing so – and allowed Ricky Ponting’s late request to change the team.
It would have been disappointing to see another England captain’s reputation being dragged through the gutter with a similar misguided decision like the abysmal episode when Paul Collingwood refused to withdraw the appeal for the run out of New Zealand batsman Grant Elliott after a mid pitch collision with Ryan Sidebottom during a one day International in 2008.
Well done Andrew Strauss, common sense prevailed and cricket was the winner this time.
