Pakistan must be breathing a huge sigh of relief to get the test series out of the way and finally get down to the one day forms of the game that they would appear to much prefer playing.
From the shambles of the test performances they look a totally different proposition in one day cricket with specialist players throughout their team. Added to the riches of their squad – the majority of the players just won the World Twenty20 – are one day specialists Imran Nazir and Naved-ul-Hasan, who both return from the rebel ICL.
They also include exciting propect, nineteen year old batsman Umar Akmal who will be hoping to make his debut at some time during the series.
Sri Lanka look like partnering Upul Tharanga with the old man of the team Sanath Jayasuriya at the top of the order in the absence of usual opener Tillakaratne Dilshan. The loss of Dilshan with his finger injury is a blow, they will be hoping he can make a return at some stage of the series.
Muttiah Muralitharan will almost certainly return to the side and Lasith Malinga is also available to play. They will also be hoping that Ajantha Mendis can rediscover some form throughout this series after a disappointing showing during the test series.
The last time these two played a one day match was the World Twenty20 semi-final which Pakistan won convincingly.
