Roll on Wednesday

Where do you start with it all? What a couple of days it has been in the mad world of cricket….

Firstly, I never got round to congratulating Warwickshire on their CB40 win on Saturday, it was a shame for Somerset to come second again, but on the whole they have had a successful season and shouldn’t be too downbeat about it, although I doubt they are thinking like that at the moment.

But what a turnaround for the Bears, down and out and certain to be relegated just three to four weeks back, and now CB40 winners, and safe for another season in the top flight of the County Championship.

And what an innings by Ian Bell to win the match, it was a shame he couldn’t continue that form in Monday’s ODI though.

Onto the main event, and after Ijaz Butthead’s remarks on Sunday, the fallout has been amazing.

We have had England players all but refuse to play, stating that they are only continuing under duress.

ECB and the England players threatening to sue Ijaz Butthead.

We have had a spat in the nets between Jonathan Trott and Wahab Riaz, with some reports suggesting Trott had him round the throat.

A reported sub-continent betting frenzy on the current ODI series being abandoned.

Proof, if ever it was needed that a neuclear bomb wouldn’t prevent Giles Clarke from ensuring that a game didn’t go ahead.

And hidden in there somewhere, Ryan Sidebottom has announced his immeadiate retirement from international cricket, in the middle of a series that he is in the squad for. A bit of a surprise, given that he still appears to be an integral part of the T20 team.

I wonder if there is more to come here? It sounds a strange one.

Of the game, it was a brilliant innings by Abdul Razzaq. The series now looks like it could it be decided by the toss though with the way the ball has been swinging under the lights, it’s hard to see either side chasing down a reasonable total given the ability of both teams to swing the ball in helpful conditions.

And what has happened to Paul Collingwood? What must Pietersen be thinking about the decision to drop him now, given the woeful form Collingwood is in? One rule for one, again?

Now I see that David Collier has further distenced the ECB from the PCB by claiming that Pakistan are unlikely to be invited back to play any more neutral tests after Butt’s outburst.

It does seem all the more remarkable what Butt said, given the ECB’s assistance to Pakistan in helping them play international cricket again.

Given all the rows and incidents, is anyone going to want Pakistan touring their country in the future, there is still a lot of unwelcome headlines from their last tour to Australia last winter, we all remember what a calamitous episode that was, and all the laughable suspensions and lifetime bans for a month or two that followed.

Finally, I heard Jonathan Agnew have the unenviable task of trying to interview the mad Ijaz Butthead on Monday. It really is an impossible task, he talks so fast, is hard to understand, blends two or three topics into one very long sentence, and has that remarkable quality that all politicians seem to possess, the ability to answer a question that wasn’t asked.

I remember Agnew having to interview this man in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on Sri Lanka and the match officials, he was just as robust and impossible to deal with back then.

Roll on Wednesday, when we can hopefully all move on!
