Not the Greatest Start!

I’ve decided to refrain from criticizing England until after Australia have batted, but it would be fair to say that Day 1 was a bit of a disappointment after getting bowled out for just 260.

I’m not going to get carried away after just 1 day, in the same way that I didn’t get drawn into believing all the hype that Australia are a spent force. There is still a long way to go yet.

It is though important that England hit the ground running on Day 2. If they can have the Aussies 3 or 4 down by lunch, then we are right back in it. If it’s 100 odd for 1, then we are in trouble.

The positive notes saw Alastair Cook and Ian Bell scoring half centuries. Cook looks like he is going to try and prove me wrong, although he had two good goes at chucking his wicket away just prior to lunch. While Bell is looking better every time he goes out to bat.

Listening to some of the Aussie commentators on the highlights tonight, they sounded very impressed with him. At least there can be no real blame attached to Bell for the fall of his wicket, he sacrificed himself for the team.

Braindead moment of the day saw a stupid review from Graeme Swann, it didn’t really matter in the end, but it shouldn’t have been wasted in that way with Bell still at the wicket.

I suppose some credit has to go to the Neanderthal. He may have fluked the hat-trick ball, but he bowled well and deserved his bit of luck. Even at this early stage in the match, he could already have bowled the match winning spell.

The bookmakers seem to think he has, Australia are now into 2/5 with most of them, although you can still get a stand alone 1/2 with William Hill. England are out to 9/2, while the draw is 11/2.

  1. Totally agree about the waste of a review. Didn’t cost us in the end, but might have done with Bell still at the crease.

If Bell carries on like this I think we’re going to need to bump him up to five, moving Colly down one. He’s in wonderful form. Could be our key man.

  2. Bell is fast becoming our best batsman, it would be interesting to know what his average is since he returned to the side in 2009.

Collingwood might find himself out of the side by the 3rd test if they decide the workload is getting too much for 4 bowlers.
