England’s Jason Roy joins Sunrisers Hyderabad – the white ball opener has been signed to play in the 2021 Indian Premier League as a late replacement for Mitchell Marsh.
Roy was originally unsold in February’s auction, but will now join Sunrisers Hyderabad as the Australia all-rounders replacement.
Marsh has withdrawn due to personal reasons, thought to be bio-secure bubble fatigue. A common problem in cricket at this moment in time.
Although it seems odd to be replacing an all-rounder with an opener, Roy’s signing means he will team up with fellow England opener Jonny Bairstow.
It’s highly unlikely Roy will play many games though. The Sunrisers already have David Warner, Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan (teams can only play 4 overseas players at once) in their ranks. Meaning Roy will be competing with the likes of Bairstow and Jason Holder for the fourth overseas berth.
But it does offer SH more options at the top of the order, and give them injury cover at the top of the innings.
There is now also the mouth watering possibility of Roy, Bairstow and Warner as a top 3. What bowling line up would want to face that?
Roy does have previous IPL experience. In the past he has represented both Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Lions.
