The easy permutation to take from this game is that if Australia win, India are out and the Aussies and Pakistan will go through to the semi-finals, if India win we will work that permutation out another time.

Australia defeated the under strength West Indies side in their only match to date, but to be honest they made very hard work of it. If, as the saying goes ‘you had just come down from Mars and heard that England and Australia had just been involved in a 6-1 series you could be forgiven for getting the two sides mixed up.

At 171/7 in the 40th over Australia were in deep trouble, it needed an unbeaten 73 from Mitchell Johnson and a significant contribution from Brett Lee (25) to get the Aussies up to 275 from their 50 overs. Even then with the hard work supposedly done West Indies fought back again, this time with the bat and at 170/3 in the 37th over, West Indies were still right in the fixture until a batting collapse saw them fall away to 225 all out.

In the Aussie team news, Michael Clarke is still a doubt with his sore back.

For India if they do win they will be right back in the competition and with their final group fixture against West Indies – who are already out – you would have to fancy them to go onto the semi finals.

With the ease in which Pakistan picked off the Indian bowling and the critical remarks from MS Dhoni about the bowlers and how they seem to be lacking confidence, it would appear that changes are in the pipeline for India’s attack.

Yusuf Pathan could be in the firing line after Dhoni said he hadn’t converted his domestic form onto the international level and RP Singh is another one who should be looking over his shoulder.

I wouldn’t want to be in Dhoni’s shoes if he has to return home twice in the same year with another underachievement on his CV.
