2nd Test Ashes Betting – Honours Even?

According to most of the pundits in the know, apparently Day 1 of the 2nd Test from Adelaide ended with honours even.

I’m not totally sure I would agree with that view, as for me, Australia just edged it. The betting markets also seem to support this view with Australia currently trading at around 2.18 – 2.20 on Betfair (compared to the 2.60 they were at the start of Day 1).

I tend to get the feeling that England will live to rue those dropped catches – particularly Michael Carberry, as how will if affect him when he comes out to bat?

I thought the bowlers again did a good job for England. Their was no sign of an Aussie batting collapse, so it was down to the attack to keep things tight and ensure England stay in the game… which so far, they have done.

I was fairly shocked at the team England picked. I have no problem with Monty playing, just very surprised at England’s positive team selection. I still think they could have been slightly bolder, and maybe picked Tim Bresnan instead of Stokes. I’m not sure Stokes will contribute with both bat and ball any better than Bresnan would have.

Day 2 starts off with yet another already crucial session of cricket. These are the little sessions that Australia were losing in England, but now appear to be starting to win.

If Australia start well and build a large 1st innings total, then they will put a lot of scoreboard pressure on England’s fragile looking batting. If on the other hand, England wipe out the rest of the Aussie batting cheaply, and win the crucial first session of cricket… they will be right back in the Test.

The main key to the Test, as is usually the case with England, is how they bat. There has to be a marked improvement on Brisbane. Australia will have a respectable total at worst, and England will at least have to match it.

If they can do that, it will allow Swann and Monty to put the Aussies under pressure in their 2nd innings.

Even if that only leads to a draw, that’s okay for me, as another batting collapse will have the Aussies scenting a series victory.

Another reason why it’s so important that England bat properly, is because the 3rd Test is so soon afterwards and it could put pressure on Ryan Harris with his fitness issues. England need to keep Australia in the field, wear them down.

If Australia only need to bowl 50 overs again, England are also keeping them fresh for Perth.
