2011 World Cup – England Batting Averages

I had a look at the England averages over the weekend and was plesantly surprised too find that we have two of the top three run scorers in the tournament, with only Kumar Sangakkara with 363 runs, ahead of Trott and Strauss.

Sangakkara also has an incredible average of 121, mainly down to achieving 3 not outs. Michael Clarke 112.5 (Pld 6 with 3 no’s) and AB de Villiers 106.00 (Pld 4, no’s 1) are the only other players currently averaging over 100.

Unfortunately England don’t have anybody averaging over (or anywhere near) 100, but I think most England fans would have to be satisfied with the runs scored by Trott (336) and Strauss (329) to date.

Luke Wright has a healthy looking average as well, but that’s on the back of one game. I think that one innings has given him a chance of facing Sri Lanka on Saturday though.

If England are to progress beyond Saturday, you would have to imagine that at least two of Bell, Bopara, Morgan and Prior will have to improve well beyond their modest averages to date, just having two batsmen scoring runs might get you through the group stages, but it won’t win you a world cup.

Bell, Bopara and Morgan are all in the mid 30’s. That’s a decent innings or two away from changing from a respectable average, into a healthy average. As I stated above, these 3 now have to support Trott and Strauss if we are to progress.

Prior’s average is the most startling one, overall it’s just 11.20. Breaking it down and it was 6.66 batting in the middle order and at the moment it’s up to the dizzy heights of 18 as an opener, so on a positive note, at least it’s getting better.

Although I do believe had the selectors wanted the wicketkeeper to open, then they would have stuck with the unlucky Steven Davies ahead of Prior.

Tim Bresnan is someone I would have expected a bit more from as well, although it’s harsh to criticise him with the situations he has found himself batting in. But even so, in any conditions, 10.25 isn’t great.
