A big congratulations to the new champions of the County Championship, Durham. As a Warwickshire fan, obviously I am disappointed that the Bears couldn’t defend the title, but if it has to go anywhere else, then why not Durham?
Durham are a county that like to do things the right way. They have no overseas player blocking up and coming – and potential England – players. They are also not a side stuffed full of naturalised former overseas players. Okay, so they might have a few late 30 some things, but on the whole they are a predominately home grown county side, giving the national side plenty of options.
There is also the issue of Geoff Cook, lying on what was believed to be his death bed, half way through the season, Cook is now celebrating the title with his team – another remarkable story.
I really can’t think of a good reason to begrudge Durham this victory, it is really is well deserved. And also congratulations to Paul Collingwood, never my favourite player in the England side, but what a solid professional and credit to the sport he is.
Well done Durham.
