1st One Day International at Sabina Park, Jamaica – 26th June 2009
Match Betting Preview
India go into Friday’s 1st One Day International as the bookmakers favourites. For this game they are a best price 17/20 with Sportingbet and are a general 8/11 elsewhere. On current form you would have to think West Indies should be favourites and they can be backed at a best price 11/10.
It remains to be seen how seriously India will be taking this four match series. This is the last series they will play before taking a two month break leading up to the Champions trophy in September and comes off the back of a gruelling recent schedule, there is a possiblity that some of their squad might already be on holiday mentally.
On the positive side with the inclusion of Dinesh Karthik, S Badrinath, M Vijay and Ashish Nehra – in for the rested or injured players – the squad has a fresh element to it of players trying to take advantage of their chance to break into what has recently been a settled side.
West Indies have gradually improved during their time in England, after a disasterous start to the tour they improved a turned out to be a major player in the World Twenty20 reaching the last four.
After the shambles of a performance in every department against the English in the Test series, they improved out of site and even their fielding was superb by the end of the T20.
Some what surprisingly the selectors have seen fit to change the team which ended the T20 so well, out go Lendl Simmons and Darren Sammy who looked decent prospects and in have come Runako Morton and Narsingh Deonarine. Morton surely the most notable selection, at 30 he is hardly a player for the future and he has had numerous chances in the past and has a colourful history off the field as well – maybe not the wisest decision the selectors have ever made and not a great message to be sending out to up and coming players.
On a positve note they have handed a call up to the uncapped Darren Bravo – half brother of Dwayne. Darren Bravo comes as a great prospect with good pedigree, it maybe an unfortunate comparison in some ways, but he has already been called the ‘new Brian Lara’, the pressure of such a tag, any youngster could do without, nevertheless you could be compared with worse players.
Match Betting Odds
India start today as odds-on favourites, think West Indies offer better value myself and are more the in-form team. From the point of view of not trusting West Indies to do the right thing and the prospect of rain in the air I’m going to leave this one alone and take a watching brief with a few to picking up some pointers for the second game on Sunday.
